Courthouse Shared Space Creative Hub Bushmills
This video showcases the transformation of a derelict Grade B1 listed courthouse into a vibrant community asset. Spearheaded by Enterprise Causeway, the project secured €7.8 million in capital funding from the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme to restore and repurpose the historic building, which had been vacant since 1972.
Through careful restoration and a sympathetic three-storey extension, the repurposed facility spans approximately 12,000 sq ft and offers mixed-use spaces designed to foster creative enterprise and social interaction. On the ground floor, visitors encounter The Designerie—a social enterprise retail space showcasing artisan crafts—and a seasonal bistro championing local produce and sustainable practices. The first floor houses a dozen private studios where makers and artists can create, market, and sell their work in a supportive environment. The top level is dedicated to flexible event spaces, including the MacNaghten Hall with its distinctive demo bar and workshop rooms, suitable for everything from cookery demonstrations to community gatherings.
Running alongside the construction was an extensive outreach programme engaging nearly 4,000 participants in cross-community arts, crafts, and cultural workshops. This initiative underscored the hub’s broader mission: to energize the local economy, nurture creative talent, and promote reconciliation by bringing people from diverse backgrounds together in a shared, inspiring environment.
